This painting is one of my favorites. It hangs behind my desk and often my students see it when I am teaching. They always ask me what it means, and I cannot tell them. Part of the mystery of this painting is that you see what you need in it.

What it shows is a purple eye, open in a field of deep blue purple with a gold ouroboros around it. An ancient symbol (the first known ouroboros is on the tomb of King Tutankhamen [13th century BCE]) depicts the snake eating its own tail. This alchemical symbol of the infinite, endless life, the eternal cycle of time, life and death, birth and rebirth.

It used to have herbs and crystals embedded in the paint, but they have slowly fallen off and now, it is simply the eye and snake.
