Snakes began to show up in my artwork as I began healing sexual trauma from my teens and early 20s. They always come with flowers. I can't help but feel Persephone in these maiden paintings, picking flowers before the abduction with Hades. I never consciously think that when I am painting, but upon reflection and viewing, her energy runs through this work. Trauma work intensively occupied my spiritual work from 2018 until 2022.

Snake is a guide of transformation and shedding of all that is not needed. Snake sees with her tongue and hears with her skin, highly attuned to the vibrations of the Earth, belly to the soil. She digs deep into the Earth for protection, coiling up in the belly of Mother Earth.

Snake has a bad reputation in Christianity for seduction and temptation, but in most cultures, Snake is a symbol of alchemy, healing. and transformation. Because of the process of shedding the skin, snake is seen as one who walks between life and death. Snakes shed their skin to allow for further growth and to remove parasites that may have attached to their old skin. As a snake grows, its skin becomes stretched, because a snake's skin doesn't grow as the animal grows. Eventually, they reach a point where further growth is not possible, so she must shed.

During that process, Snake’s eyes go cloudy, giving Snake a trance-like mystical appearance, for even the eyes are covered in skin that is too tight at times, and so during this molting process, her vision is cloudy until she emerges with soft, supple skin. It is then that she is most vulnerable and hides in dark, covered places. When the snake emerges, she sees the world with clarity. She is reborn. May you gracefully shed skin with snake.
