This is the painting I made to honor my breasts. I had always disliked having big boobs, so when I was diagnosed with breast cancer and told I needed a double mastectomy, I immediately thought--How can I make this experience sacred?

I did a number of things--I threw myself a Boob Voyage party with boobie cupcakes and a bra burning! I also asked all my healer friends for Reiki and healing and ten hands on healers laid hands on me, sang, drummed and rattled over me. They cried tears for me. They anointed me. It was so very beautiful.

My personal relationship with my breasts was complex. They brought me so much attention in my younger years, grabbed without my permission, but also they fed my babies who later rested their head on the soft suppleness of them for comfort. I wanted to honor them, but had no idea what to do. An artist friend suggested I paint in honor of my boobs. I actually painted my breasts gold and used them on the canvas. I had drawn this anatomical heart many years ago from one of our anatomy books, so I used it in the painting. I kept thinking, "Is this an offering to the goddess? Are my breasts an offering?" And the Latin phrase came, "Estne nihil sanctum?" In the end, what emerged felt sacred and an important ritual to release my breasts. I painted this two days before my breasts were removed, and I worried I still had gold paint on them.

Portion of the proceeds go to Breast Cancer Coalition of Pennsylvania.
